    Although the potato is New Hampshire’s state vegetable, the state ranks low in spud production. So far. As dairy continues to wind down in northern New England, some growers are eyeing those fields for vegetable crops, such as potatoes. Jay Savage of Savage Farms LLC, which raises potatoes and sod in Deerfield, Mass., bought a former dairy farm about 50 miles north in Walpole, N.H., last spring and set right to work growing 185 acres of potatoes.

    More than 100 years ago, the last logs were driven down the Connecticut River within sight of Maplemont Farm in Barnet, Vt. The famous log drives are long gone. But the farm, where an anniversary celebration was held in 2015, is still in agriculture. For the past five years, owners Amber Reed and Chris Doolan have been bringing its former dairy barn back to life for use on their sheep farm.

    For me, baking bread with a sourdough starter is a bit like playing golf. You know you can hit that long shot or make that putt, but it doesn’t happen every time. So, you keep practicing. And baking. Sourdough starter can make so much more than just a loaf of delicious, crusty bread. With the discard (what you take out when you feed the starter), you can make sourdough pizza, pancakes, muffins — the list goes on. There are as many recipes for starter as there are bread.

    The latest round of grain export sales data from USDA, out Thursday morning and covering the week through July 20, didn’t show much bullish or bearish numbers for traders to digest. Soybeans once again led the way, although totals were still slightly on the lower end of analyst estimates. Corn and wheat also posted rangebound results this past week. Corn exports found combined old and new crop sales totaling 25.6 million bushels. Old crop sales improved 15% from the prior four-week average.

    Reps. Jimmy Panetta, D- Calif., and Mike Kelly, R- Pa., have re-introduced legislation they say will help family-owned farms continue operating after a family member dies. The Preserving Family Farms Act would modify tax law, allowing farmers and ranchers to pay estate taxes based on the value of their land for agricultural use.
