During a brief regular meeting last Tuesday, Monticello City Council members voted to submit a counter offer to Land Holdings, the high bidders for the Mine Lake Property. The council decided to purchase the 705 acres property in May 2017, for $3.6 million, with the hopes of it being a viable water source for the city and a place for industrial development.

Matthew Alan Boring, 35, negotiated a guilty plea deal Tuesday resulting in seven years of confinement for his role in a vehicle accident that killed Daylan Norwood in December 2023. The sentence was the result of a hearing held during a criminal court session in the Putnam County Courtroom under the jurisdiction of Judge Stephen Bradley.
Judge Is Against Trespass Warrant

Judge Terry Massey issued a ruling April 25 in Holy Nation Church’s civil hearing reviewed last Tuesday in Jasper County Superior Court. The hearing stemmed from a September 2024 incident in which one of the plaintiffs in the hearing were issued a criminal trespass warrant for visiting the church location. Current church leaders filed the warrant.

By SUSAN JACOBSDistrict Attorney (DA) T. Wright Barksdale appeared in Jasper Superior Court Tuesday morning for a pre-trial hearing in the criminal case of Matthew Boring, indicted on five counts from a December 2022 vehicular homicide case. The criminal case has been continued several times over the course of two and a half years. The DA said the state is ready to go to court while Attorneys Melinda Johnson and Bryan Frost for the defendant requested another continuance of Judge Stephen Bradley.

Judge Alison Burleson presided over the February 4 Jasper Superior Court criminal session. The following cases were resolved at that time:Gregory S. Walton, sentenced to 15 years with the first six months in Jasper County jail for homicide by vehicle in the first degree. Another count of homicide by vehicle was nolle pressed as well as two counts of driving under the influence. Fined $2,000.
City Lifts Building Moratorium

A quorum of Monticello City Council members met briefly Tuesday to approve the permitting fee schedule and lift the moratorium on building permits. J. Brett Haynes of Falcon Design suggested revisions to the permitting fee schedule in accordance to current building standards. Council members had a few questions to ask of the consultant.

Monticello City Council members entered into a memorandum of agreement (MOA) with the Development Authority of Jasper County (DAJC) to obtain a bond with a potential business. The action came after a brief executive session for real estate purposes with Tony Rogers of the DAJC during a special called meeting Tuesday afternoon. With all council members in attendance, also approved was the first reading of the building regulations ordinance.
