An RFP was initiated by the Ministry of Defence for procurement of more than 4.23 lakh units of the Close Quarter Battle carbines in November 2022. The CQB designed by ARDE and manufactured by the development partner, Bharat Forge Ltd was also fielded. Many other industries also fielded their respective products. After extensive performance evaluation and other quality and maintainability trials, five weapons were qualified.

The Pune City police Tuesday night booked an office-bearer of the BJP’s city unit on charges of sexually harassing a senior woman police officer and outraging her modesty near the venue of a programme attended by Union minister Nitin Gadkari on Monday morning. The accused, Pramod Kondhre, is the general secretary of the city BJP unit and has been an officer-bearer of the party from the Kasba Peth area. In a statement given to the police on Tuesday, he denied the allegations.

Earlier this month, when the Pimpri-Chinchwad cyber police raided a small village in Ahilyanagar district as part of a probe, they caught a man with nine mobile phones, 23 bank passbooks, 18 cheque books and 35 debit cards. What came to light was a sophisticated cyber crime racket involving young men and a well-organized funds siphoning operation suggesting that cyber fraud rackets were now not just limited to traditional hotspots or cities but have even come to rural Maharashtra.

In the last week of March, a 35-year-old finance manager working at a multinational IT solutions firm in Pune received a notice from a private sector bank regarding defaulting on EMIs for a loan he had not taken. Initially, he thought it might be cyber fraud, but he soon received several calls from bank executives and realised that a personal loan of Rs 18 lakh had been fraudulently taken out in his name. This was not an isolated incident.
