The roof of a porch on Semple Street collapsed during a St. Patrick’s Day celebration on Friday afternoon. Video taken at the party shows at least 20 people sitting and standing on the roof when it buckled, falling onto more partygoers. At 6:03 p.m., Pitt Police announced the 300 block of Semple Street would be closed until further notice. At least three ambulances and one fire engine responded to the scene. I’m sitting in the waiting room of my dentist’s office, knitting. Note that I started knitting the day before this. So what I’m holding in my hands is a frumpy, misshapen length of purplish yarn that vaguely resembles Tennessee. The dental hygienist, who’s known my family for years, rounds the corner to call my sister back and immediately notices my knitting. “Oh cool, what are you making?” I awkwardly explain that I just started, and whatever I’m creating is a far cry from some possible product.

Yes, sadly, the much-awaited and anticipated Spring Break ’25 has ended. We are back in the surprisingly warm temperatures of Pittsburgh — miles from the closest beach, bikinis packed away for a few more months and our heads back in the grind for the next seven weeks. While people may be trying to fool you by wearing shorts this time of year, it is sadly not summer or even spring. I, in combination with both my fears of spending money and drowning, returned home for the break.

On Feb. 24, Pitt’s Counseling Center faced backlash after briefly renaming an event from “LGBT Peer Support Space” to “LGB Peer Support Space,” omitting the “T” for transgender. The change was quickly reversed, but many community members remain concerned about the impact of the decision. “We deeply care about all students feeling supported and welcome at Pitt,” University spokesperson Jared Stonesifer said.
