    A Long Beach City College counselor who was previously fired for “elbowing” a student during the 2022 commencement ceremony has been rehired. During the commencement ceremony, Kashara Moore mispronounced LBCC graduate Carmina J. Barraza’s name. Moore’s elbow appeared to make contact with Barraza after the student corrected the pronunciation of her name, which caused Barraza to tell then Board of Trustees representative Herlinda Chico, “she elbowed me,” referring to Moore.

    Guest speaker Lynne Thompson read her poetry at the Writers Reading Series event, and focused on themes such as women, religion, culture and her travels to Kenya and Tahiti.  The event took place on April 30 and was coordinated by English professor Jeff Epley and sponsored by LBCC Library Learning Resources. “I woke up one day and thought, ‘What’s wrong with my life, I should be writing poetry,’” Thompson said.

    Not only do mental health events and workshops deserve to be held more often for students, but they should  be advertised more on campus as well as on the upcoming events page on the LBCC website. These workshops are mainly held during the month of May, which is Mental Health Awareness month, however they should be prioritized year-round.

    Students, staff, and family members all came out to support the Justice Scholars program and their art at the opening ceremony of “Hope Restored: Justice Scholars Student Exhibition,” on Feb 13. The purpose of this exhibition was to bring recognition to a group of people who were formerly incarcerated and give others the opportunity to feel and connect with their artwork.

    Friday, February 2: ParisTrain Ride to the Loire vALLEYAfter a sleepless red-eye flight to Paris and rushing to the Gare Montparnasse, I am writing from a high-speed train heading to the heart of France. Parisian city streets turn to countryside in a glimpse. Before coming here, I moved out of my apartment in Oakland, knowing that when I returned, I would hit the road to Virginia to research the story of enslaved Black winemakers at Thomas Jefferson’s plantation, Monticello.
