Opinion: Mental health events deserve better advertisement

Not only do mental health events and workshops deserve to be held more often for students, but they should be advertised more on campus as well as on the upcoming events page on the LBCC website. These workshops are mainly held during the month of May, which is Mental Health Awareness month, however they should be prioritized year-round.

Students, staff, and family members all came out to support the Justice Scholars program and their art at the opening ceremony of “Hope Restored: Justice Scholars Student Exhibition,” on Feb 13. The purpose of this exhibition was to bring recognition to a group of people who were formerly incarcerated and give others the opportunity to feel and connect with their artwork.

May 16, 2024 Students and art lovers gathered at City College’s Gregory Kondos Gallery on April 18 to hear artist Mercy Hawkins speak about her creations and journey of being an artist. During the event, attendees heard Hawkins speak about her art, and got to observe it themselves, in an exhibit titled “Clear Morning.” Hawkins shared with the audience about how she got into art and her main goal and message she’s trying to convey.

Nothing is more fun than trying out new coffee shops, and luckily, Sacramento has some of the best coffee shops around. There are so many coffee shops all over Sacramento that offer a wide variety of different drinks to try from. After trying most coffee shops around Sacramento I narrowed it down to my top three favorites. Goodside Coffee located at 1430 H St. is one of my all-time favorites, it has a modern trendy feel that is very pleasing.
City College welcomes community for its second annual ‘Celebrate City!’ event

City College students and families gathered to join in at the second-annual open house event, “Celebrate City!” on Friday, April 19. The event was held for people to experience what it means to be a Panther, complete with a variety of different food vendors, music and entertainment. Different clubs and programs organized booths in the main quad to inform students on all they have to offer, and different departments had informational flyers to learn more about each program.

At the start of the year, I left Oakland and put all my belongings into storage in preparation for a research fellowship at Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello in Charlottesville, Virginia. I’ll be here for at least six more weeks, researching the role that enslaved Black Americans—like Monticello’s cook Ursula Granger and head gardener Wormley Hughes—played in one of American wine's most referenced origin stories. These names also shaped our wine culture as we know it.

On every corner, you can expect to see a hidden thrift store nearby, if you look hard enough. I’ve been thrifting practically my whole life. Growing up near Los Angeles, the thrifting possibilities were endless. Vintage clothes, room decor, kitchen supplies, CDs, books, shoes, jewelry, I’ve thrifted it all.
