Students, staff, and family members all came out to support the Justice Scholars program and their art at the opening ceremony of “Hope Restored: Justice Scholars Student Exhibition,” on Feb 13. The purpose of this exhibition was to bring recognition to a group of people who were formerly incarcerated and give others the opportunity to feel and connect with their artwork.

LBCC sent texts, emails and phone calls to students and staff, warning them to wear masks due to the poor air quality caused by California wildfires that began on Tuesday, Jan. 7, but both TTC and LAC remain open. A public safety alert was also sent by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) warning people to stay inside. “I got the safety alert around 7 a.m. and then the text from the school about 10 a.m,” LBCC student Elaine Pouvi said.

Ron Dizon brought the taste and smell of robust award-winning Filipino coffee to LBCC from the farmer to your cup. Dizon, the founder of Telifo Coffee company, brings culture and taste together to make a great cup of coffee from beans grown in the Philippines, always looking for ways to rediscover the perfect brew and keep the legacy of the island alive. Telifo is a Filipino coffee shop in Los Alamitos, California that opened in 2020 from the ground up, looking to expand to Long Beach soon.

Spread holiday cheer and make a difference this season at Long Beach City College by donating to the Annual Toy Drive from Nov. 12 to Dec. 13 to bring joy to student parents in need with donations that can help brighten the holidays for families on campus. The toy drive is aimed at supporting student-parents on campus which offers a helping hand to those juggling academics and family responsibilities, ensuring that their children experience the joy and magic of the holidays.

ASB hosted their third ASB After Dark event on Nov.19 on the Liberal Arts Campus to connect students with late classes to their community at LBCC. The event was also at the Trades Tech Community Learning Campus from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in between building DD and GG on Wednesday. Calvin Lewis, the representative of evening and online students, was one of several ASB members who helped organize the event.

LBCC’s dance showcase kicked off on Friday Nov. 1 at 7 p.m. with 10 dances in total and three students presenting their first-ever choreographies. The dance program had a total of nine weeks to prepare all 10 dances and showed a wide array of styles including ballet, modern and a dash of tap dancing. One of the highlight dances of the show was the third dance titled “And So, They Prevailed” choreographed by student dancer Amanda Arroyo.

The opening ceremony for the newest art gallery at LAC on Nov. 1 focused on the work of various LBCC alumni, all of which have displayed individual pieces to portray who they are as an artist. Rather than giving the art gallery a specific theme, multiple LBCC alumni were invited to display their preferred piece, all of which differed in genre and style. Many attendees such as Greg Martin were intrigued at the various pieces, some of which left them with many questions.

Long Beach City College hosted a Halloween Carnival filled with free food, a DJ set and a costume contest for students and staff on Oct. 31 at LAC. Students and faculty came in a variety of whimsical and spooky costumes and others were part of an ensemble costume. The costume contest gave the opportunity for students to show off their costumes whether it be a store bought or homemade.

LBCC’s annual Dia de los Muertos celebration was filled with food, activities, live music and performances on Saturday at LAC’s P Building courtyard. Dia de los Muertos, Day of the Dead, is a Mexican holiday that honors deceased loved ones and celebrates the cycle of life. In the courtyard, people were able to make ofrendas, altars, for their friends and family members who have passed, many of which were decorated with flowers, candles, pictures and any memorabilia dedicated to those deceased.

Freshly baked empanadas, pan dulce and homemade refreshments were among the goods sold by LBCC culinary arts students at their Dia de Los Muertos bake sale held at LAC on Thursday. The bake sale took place between the T and V buildings, a placement which was intentional according to those who were organizing and running the event. “We wanted to be in a spot where we would get good foot traffic,’” Julio Maya, a culinary arts student who helped organize the event said.
