The reasons are layered, but lack of talent has never been one of them. Kevan Hall was one of the first Black designers to dress a celebrity for the Met Gala. In 2008, along with André Leon Talley, he designed an African-inspired dress for Kimora Lee Simmons.

On the runway, Alton Mason glides with rhythm, allowing his spindly body to pulse with precision. His expressions exude swagger—a slight smirk, a dalliance with his eyes—or sometimes, he does what’s in his spirit, like when he did a backflip at the Louis Vuitton Fall/Winter 2019 show after the late Virgil Abloh asked him to improvise. On the page, his pliancy is also apparent: elongated backbends, nimble shoulders, seemingly always knowing what to do with his arms.

While it’s reaped the rewards of its initial purpose—putting American fashion designers on the global map—there is some truth to the sentiments. In the past, NYFW seemed to be less focused on the spectacle of it all (celebrities, gimmicks, marketing tactics), and more focused on the clothes.
