D.C. jazz bassist Ben Williams digs into his family history of activism and religion on his fourth studio album, Between Church & State, which came out Friday, May 2. Williams was already known as one of the best young bassists in jazz – or “Black American Music” as his collaborator Nicholas Payton calls it – when he released his album I Am A Man in 2020. The album is based on Williams’ introspection about social justice and the human experience during the latter half of the last decade.

It’s finally spring here in the D.C. region. The cherry blossoms are blooming, temperatures are rising, and the Washington Nationals are preparing to take the field at Nats Park. The Nats will play their home opener against the Philadelphia Phillies at 4 PM on Thursday, March 27. The first 20,000 fans that make it to the game will be rewarded with a free t-shirt. Folks going to a baseball game this year will see more than just the game.

Washington D.C. has the highest number of restaurants with a Michelin star rating, per capita, of any city in the country and the third most in the world. While there’s plenty of Ethiopian injera, Salvadoran pupusas and southern BBQ in the District, restaurant critics and residents alike have noted a lack of cheese-forward cuisine. Among the restaurateurs filling D.C.’s “black hole of cheese” is Jill Erber, the self-proclaimed cheese lady behind the restaurant and shop in Del Ray, Cheesetique.
