    Awesome Con was back at D.C.’s Convention Center this weekend for its 13th edition. The weekend-long convention celebrated nerd culture, featuring cosplaying, gaming, celebrity meet and greets, and just being yourself. On the convention floor, Tim O’Grady of McLean, Virginia dressed in a homemade costume of a guardian from the popular science-fiction video game Destiny 2. He said it took him about a week and $150 to construct.

    We’re inside D.C. Fire and EMS Fireboat headquarters on the Southwest waterfront, looking out over the Potomac River. Washington National Airport’s air traffic control tower is visible through the trees. It’s a familiar view for fireboat pilot C.J. Isbell, diver Jeff Mathias, and technician Chris Finelli. They’re all longtime D.C. Fire and EMS veterans and members of the region’s only 24/7 marine rescue unit. Just over a month has passed since the midair collision near DCA claimed sixty-seven lives.
