Zimbabwe’s ever widening trade deficit is hurting the economy and must be tackled in a holistic manner, a lobby for consumption of local products has warned. In 2023, Zimbabwe’s trade deficit amounted to around US$2 billion as the country’s appetite for imports continues to grow.

The model Naomi Campbell has been banned from being a charity trustee after a UK watchdog found charity funds were spent on luxury hotels and spa treatments. A Charity Commission inquiry found Fashion for Relief was not passing on as much of the money raised as it was supposed to. Instead it was being spent on cigarettes and security for Campbell and other unauthorised payments to one of her fellow charity trustees.

ELSEWHERE in this paper, we carry a story exposing horrifying statistics about how close family members are raping or sexually abusing relatives’ children. The abuses even extend to fathers raping their own daughters or even uncles sexually abusing their nephews or nieces. According to statistics by the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPAZ), they recorded nearly 20 000 cases of child abuse last year alone.

THE Retailers Association of Zimbabwe (RAZ), an amalgamation of the country’s biggest retailers, has weighed into the exchange rate conundrum that has threatened to wipe away the sector. In submissions to Treasury, the association, whose membership include Zimbabwe Stock Exchange-listed firms, warned the sector was virtually on the brink which puts the country in a difficult situation since the constituency pays taxes and directly employs over 20 000.
