    A 16-year-old male has been charged in connection with a series of acts of vandalism in Arnprior and McNab/Braeside. Officers with the Renfrew detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) and the Renfrew Crime Unit made the arrest May 8. Police said “graffiti, historical hate-motivated symbols,” was reported May 7 and May 8 — discovered in multiple locations, including the Red Pine Boat Launch in McNab/Braeside and Robert Simpson Park in Arnprior.

    McNab/Braeside Mayor Lori Hoddinott is condemning the wilful damage at the Red Pine Boat Launch and surrounding areas in the township. “Last night, our community was targeted by a series of acts of vandalism, including the spray painting of racist symbols and language on public signs,” she told Inside Ottawa Valley in an emailed statement May 8. The Renfrew detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is investigating “this disturbing incident,” the mayor said.

    A judge has ordered an assessment that will offer a mental-health opinion on whether a Carleton Place man, accused in connection with a series of threats against employees at area businesses, could be considered not criminally responsible. In Perth’s Ontario Court of Justice May 5, the defendant, 36, appeared virtually from the Brockville Jail. He is charged with five counts of uttering threats to cause death or harm, four counts of criminal harassment and four counts of harassing communications.

    The preliminary hearing of a youth accused in the death of a Perth teen begins next month. The 16-year-old appeared in Perth’s Ontario Court of Justice Monday, May 5 charged with first-degree murder in the 2024 death of Reese Stanzel, 15. The charge has not been proven in court. The identity of the teen is protected under the Youth Criminal Justice Act. The in-person preliminary hearing is expected to last seven days, with dates between June 3 and July 2.

    Hydro One is planning a power outage for Sunday, June 1, impacting 572 customers in Carleton Place. The eight-hour power cut, running from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., is necessary to perform maintenance. “All customers affected by the planned maintenance outage have been contacted,” the utility indicated. Originally, the work was scheduled for Sunday, May 4. Hydro One reminds all members of the public to always stay clear of downed power lines or equipment. Never assume they are safe to approach.
