A day before the Red Sox tried to salvage the final game of a three-city West Coast road swing Wednesday night in Anaheim, Calif., a few hours prior to the team being walked off yet again in losing to the Angels, Alex Cora provided a blunt assessment of the 2025 season. “We’ve been an average team,” he said. The math proves his point: With a 40-42 record after Wednesday’s 5-2 loss to the Angels, the Red Sox stumbled past the season’s official halfway point stuck in the middling neighborhood.

It’s an age-old story, covering some of sports’ most dramatic moments. From Kirk Gibson’s World Series home run to Curt Schilling’s bloody sock, from Kerri Strug’s ailing ankle to Kevin McHale’s broken foot, a player’s willingness to push through pain to be there for their teammates has been lauded and celebrated. The higher the stakes, the more we push for ailing players to give it a shot.

The strangeness began the moment Brad Marchand introduced himself to the hockey world wearing the foreign red of the Florida Panthers. The pain? That came this past week, watching Marchand skate around the Panthers’ home rink with the Stanley Cup in his hands, smiling, hugging, high-fiving and handshaking his way around a second consecutive victory celebration the Panthers almost certainly would not have enjoyed had Marchand not arrived via a trade deadline swap with the Bruins.

The Sunday evening headlines were all about Rafael Devers. This stunning story goes all the way back to Mookie Betts. Two homegrown franchise players sent packing to the West Coast — the first tearing apart the foundation of a championship roster, the second closing the book on one of the worst decisions in franchise history.

Bruins fans know this Brad Marchand. They know the guy flying around the Stanley Cup ice with a nose for the goal, the one stalking up and down the bench with encouraging words for teammates, the one climbing under the skin of opposing skaters, ready to jump in on any scrum. Bruins fans love this Brad Marchand. Or at least they did when he was wearing Black and Gold. But Marchand plays for the enemy now, and he’s been busy proving himself one of the best trade deadline acquisitions of all time.

Why do I think Marco Sturm can build a new culture with the Bruins? Because I watched him do it for Team Germany at the 2018 Olympics. So much fun talking to those who were there, and oh, also to the great Patrice Bergeron. https://t.co/gEdgPSyYue via @BostonGlobe

Big news here from @nicolecyang

The Patriots have entered contract negotiations with their lead head coaching candidate Mike Vrabel, according to a league source. https://t.co/OZTQiAuVAZ

There's a great Netflix doc out on the Red Sox comeback in the 2004 ALCS and @BGlobeSports colleagues have written great stories about the 20th ann'y. I covered that series too ... from the Yankees side. Five memories that stand out. https://t.co/xIEmD9LEyT via @BostonGlobe
