Thanks to 25 years of sun-filled family vacations, Desert Mountain has long held a special place in the hearts of one Washington state couple. So, with retirement in close sight, the empty nesters decided to look for a second home in the area. The search wasn’t as easy as they hoped, but when the wife drove by a hillside lot on a hunt with their real estate agent, she knew she’d found the one. “It spoke to me,” she says, pointing to the stunning mountain views that drew her in.

Sometimes the perfect location isn’t exactly perfect. Such was the case for a Colorado- and California-based couple looking to build a retirement home in Arizona. They zeroed in on a parcel with jaw-dropping views of Pinnacle Peak and the golf course below. But, while the vistas were unbeatable, the overgrown, boulder-strewn land itself posed significant challenges. Fortunately, architect Tor Stuart had a plan. “Tor was amazing and had a phenomenal vision,” the husband says.

Drawn to its lush setting and classic architecture, Jessie and Andrew Somoza decided to start a new chapter in a 1930s-era Georgian Colonial on a hilly, wooded lot in Buckhead. After becoming acquainted with the home’s charms, quirks and outright problems, they hired architect Ross Piper, builder Stuart Grubb and interior designer Sande Beck, who had designed their former home, to help them make it their own. “They wanted it to feel unique and personal,” says Beck.

Designed by architect James Means in the 1970s, the charming two-story Dutch Colonial in Buckhead seemed like an ideal spot for a stylish couple to raise their young family. Envisioning a sophisticated blend of classical and contemporary influences, they recruited interior designer Susan Ferrier to help them make it their own. “They wanted a warm, beautiful family home but didn’t want to do an extensive renovation,” says Ferrier.
