Robert Markel, 89, was found dead near his trailer in Collier County, Florida, in what authorities believe to be the first fatal black bear attack recorded in the state's history. Three bears have been captured and are undergoing DNA analysis to determine their involvement in the attack. Markel's grandson called 911 reporting the bear attack on the dog and expressing concern for his grandfather's safety.

For the first time in recorded Florida history, a black bear has killed a human, and officials are working to find the bear, with three already taken for DNA analysis. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, along with Collier County Sheriff's Office, responded to a call early May 5 about a bear mauling a man and his dog in the tiny, remote area of Jerome, officials said.

Florida officials confirmed an 89-year-old man and his dog were killed in the first fatal bear attack in the state's recorded history. On the morning of May 5, authorities found Robert Markel and his dog deceased from an apparent bear attack on Markel's property in Jerome, a small unincorporated community 30 miles east of Naples, according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.

Florida Fish and Wildlife is investigating after a man and a dog died in a suspected black bear attack on May 5, 2025, just south of the Big Cypress Wildlife Management Area in Collier County. At 7:07 a.m., the Collier County Sheriff's Office received a call regarding a potential bear mauling on State Road 29, between Naples and Everglades City. Upon arrival at the scene, deputies found one person and a dog had been fatally mauled. The black bear could still be in the area, FWC officials warned.
