Robert Markel, 89, was found dead near his trailer in Collier County, Florida, in what authorities believe to be the first fatal black bear attack recorded in the state's history. NAPLES, FL – One person has been found dead in a possible bear attack, authorities said. Officers were on the scene and investigating it as an "active crime scene," Arielle Callender, the public information officer for the South Region office of the Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission, said on May 5. The Collier County Sheriff’s Office received a call shortly after 7 a.m. in reference to a possible bear encounter near a highway in Jerome, a rural area east of Marco Island.

Residents in Naples' Wilshire Lakes neighborhood scrambled Wednesday as flames licked their properties, smoke snarled rush-hour traffic, and helicopters dumped water to squelch a 10-acre brush fire. "There were huge flames in people's backyards, in our neighborhood, and the smoke just kept rising and rising," said Kristin Milewicz, a Wilshire Lakes resident.
