When I sat down at this desk here at the Rio Rancho Observer last fall, I had every intention of staying for the long haul. Clearing out the piles of records and binders of stats left behind by my predecessor, Gary Herron, was a massive undertaking. His files were immense in their scope and pretty intimidating in their complexity. Gary was a master of his craft, and he left some big shoes behind. Far from shying away from it, however, I dove in. I mean, why not? I love sports. I love writing.
Tough road trip for Runners

CHIHUAHUA, MEXICO – The Runners took a trip south of the border on Friday and Saturday to play a doubleheader against the vaunted Chihuahua Savage II at the Corner Sports Arena in Chihuahua, Mexico. The trip did not go well. The Runners finished the two-game run with two loses, 23-9 on Mar. 14 and 22-4 on Mar. 15. They were outscored 45-13 over that stretch. Their record drops to 1-10 with one game left in the season. There is, however, still reason to feel good about the season.

RIO RANCHO — The Rio Rancho City Council Governing Body usually packs its meetings with items. They handle a lot of business at their twice-monthly public meetings, so, it was a nice break for the councilors and Mayor Gregg Hull when the agenda ended up being relatively light for the March 13 meeting. That doesn’t mean there wasn’t plenty to take care of, but there was little debate during the meeting, and all ordinances and resolutions passed unanimously.

BERNALILLO – Crowds gathered at the intersection of NM-528 and NM-540 on Thursday afternoon, signs in hand and slogans at the ready. The group of nearly 100 protesters set up shop on the median and began their chants, their cheers, their shouts. All these people gathered at this particular spot for one reason: to protest car manufacturer Tesla and its owner Elon Musk. “I was tired of just sitting there,” said one protester who brought her dogs, Ophelia and Virgil with her.
