RIO RANCHO — When the New Mexico Activities Association released its bracket for the Nusenda Credit Union State Baseball Tournament, seeing the Cleveland and Rio Rancho high school baseball teams awarded home field advantage for the best-of-three series this weekend wouldn’t have surprised anyone. Both city teams have appeared in the last two state championship games: The Storm (18-8 and 10-2 at home) lost last May’s battle with La Cueva.

That’s not exactly how the regular season ended for the Rio Rancho High School softball team, which ended its three-game skid Friday, May 2, with a 5-3 win over Cleveland at the Shock Yards. Last week, the evening after a loss to visiting Piedra Vista, dropping the Rams from second to third place, came another double-digit loss to No. 2 La Cueva, which racked up its 17th win in a row.

RIO RANCHO — The New Mexico State Police officer arrested Friday afternoon was actually involved in two accidents, according to the criminal complaint filed in Sandoval County Magistrate Court. Hugo Diaz Amaya, 29, of Rio Rancho, is charged with driving while under the influence, two counts of reckless driving, and failure to give immediate notice of accidents, all misdemeanors. In a Friday release about the arrest, RRPD said the investigation revealed he is an officer with the NMSP.
