Almost 70 years ago, the Sisters of Mercy took in an infant named Maria Morrow who had intellectual and developmental disabilities, and Holy Angels was born.

    Combating domestic violence has been Bea Cote's life for 25 years. She works in five counties in the Charlotte region, and she told Belmont Rotarians recently that she "feels most welcomed and best heard in Gaston County."Unfortunately, Gaston County is also where she is most needed, because she has more domestic abuser clients here than in either of her other counties, which include Mecklenburg, Cleveland, Lincoln and Union.

    Some low-level offenders at risk of arrest in Gaston County are being given a chance to avoid prosecution and jail by voluntarily participating in a program to help them address the behavioral health concerns that led to the interaction with police. The program is called LEAD (Law Enforcement Assisted Diversion), and program coordinator Adrien Sanders told members of the Belmont Rotary Club about the effort when she spoke at a recent meeting.
