KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT/Gray News) - Authorities in Tennessee say a driver has died after a trailer hitch went through his Jeep’s windshield Monday evening. According to Rural Metro Fire, crews responded to a reported crash near the intersection of Clinton Highway and Pleasant Ridge Road in North Knoxville at about 3:30 p.m.The Tennessee Highway Patrol said the deadly crash involved 72-year-old Michael Walker, who was driving a Jeep Grand Cherokee.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) - A student at Rockwood High School was arrested on Tuesday after making a threat. According to Chief Deputy Tim Phillips with the Roane County Sheriff’s Office, school officials were made aware of a potential threat allegedly made by a student at around 10:45 a.m. on Tuesday. Phillips said the incident was reported to law enforcement, prompting officers to respond to make sure everyone on campus was safe.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) - McGhee Tyson Airport announced on Wednesday the U.S. Department of Transportation named it the fastest-growing airport in 2024. According to airport officials, USDOT said TYS was the fastest-growing airport by passenger percentage increase last year out of the top 100 major US airports. Passenger traffic at TYS increased over 18% in 2024 vs 2023.

SWEETWATER, Tenn. (WVLT) - McMinn County Sheriff Joe Guy said deputies caught five burglars in the act Monday morning. According to Guy, deputies went to Sweetwater Airsoft on County Road 275 at around 12:30 a.m. for a report of a theft in progress. Guy said when deputies arrived on the scene, they found a Ford F-150 with two suspects inside, and as more deputies arrived, they found three more suspects at the corner of the property.

BRISTOL, Tenn. (WVLT) - The Bristol Motor Speedway has named its dignitaries for this Sunday’s NASCAR Cup Series race. Before the green flag is waved on the Food City 500, “Voice of the Vols” Bob Kesling and Baseball Hall of Famer Johnny Bench will serve as co-grand marshals for drivers to start their engines. “It is a great honor to be selected as co-grand marshal for the prestigious Food City 500 at Bristol Motor Speedway,” Kesling said.
