A bistro and bar in downtown Calgary has introduced a no tipping policy, sparking discussion about Canada’s tipping culture. Heliopolis Social Café opened in the the 800 block of First Street S.W. in August 2024, and has removed the expectation of gratuities or a service charge for guests. “We believe hospitality should not be transactional. It should be fair, consistent and respectful for the guests and for the team members,” said co-owner Rana Allam.

Two starkly different narratives emerged Tuesday during closing arguments in the second-degree murder trial of the teen, now 18-year-old, accused in the fatal shooting of 16-year-old Jal Acor Jal three years ago. The defence argued Jal had his finger on the trigger and was accidentally shot while the two struggled over a gun. The Crown, however, painted a more calculated picture, alleging the victim was ambushed and shot in the back of the head.

What is believed to be a copy of a bootlegged tape from legendary grunge and punk rock band Nirvana’s first and only Calgary show has surfaced—34 years later. The rare recording is from March 4, 1991, just months before the Seattle band exploded into the mainstream. “I think it’s great. It’s one of those legendary stories that everybody in the scene talks about. ‘Were you there? Were you there?’” said Mike Bell, a former music reviewer for the Calgary Herald and Calgary Sun. “I was there.

A survey released Tuesday reveals some Albertans are questioning whether the provincial government’s planned changes to the automobile insurance industry will drive down rates. The survey, conducted by Nanos Research, was commissioned by the Alberta branch of the Canadian Bar Association (CBA Alberta), which represents more than 5,500 lawyers across Alberta.
