After a wet weekend, summer weather returns to Boston

Wet weather seems to be a thing reserved for weekends in Boston. So we'll leave it in the past and focus on the days ahead. The mild morning has turned hot this afternoon with temperatures more in line with June. We expect a mainly dry day with 70s for highs in Boston, and a few mid-70s across Metrowest and 128. This is a testament to the southerly winds that are overhead, and not too breezy today. There's an early window for a quick and light east wind today, but the warm up is already in progress.

The tranquil conditions Thursday and calm skies will turn cloudy and overcast around sunset. This will be the intro to the first of three wet weather systems this weekend. The first will be the colder of the trio. How much snow will we get in Mass., NH? Upper air temperatures will run a few degrees colder than normal and be around 28 degrees. This will be just enough for the formation of snow above our heads... however, surface temperatures will tote the line of 33-35 degrees.

Now that Boston's rain is coming to an end, here's what comes next... We're nearly done with our deluge of rain, and it hasn't been easy to navigate. Most of the rain in the past 24 hours brought over an inch for the Boston Metro, with Logan Airport picking up 1.67 inches as of midday. Sharon recorded 2.15 inches and Bridgewater closed in on 2.5 inches.

Melting continues Friday with plenty of sun, and milder air... for now. But a cold front is blowing in with cooler air Friday night. Winds will remain breezy Friday, with peak gusts near 45 mph across central Massachusetts and the Berkshires. Through Boston and the South Shore, gusts are likely near 30 mph. Friday night, as the cold air settles in, clear skies are around. Temperatures will start off in the teens and 20s Saturday morning, with sunny skies.
Another earthquake reported off New England overnight

Another, smaller earthquake was reported off the coast of Maine overnight. The 2.0-magnitude earthquake occurred around 3:15 a.m. Wednesday off the coast of York, Maine, about the same location as Monday's 3.8-magnitude quake. The exact location was 10 kilometers southest of York Habor, at a depth of 9.8 kilometers, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The seismic activity registered on Weston Observatory around 3:30 a.m. No damage has been reported as a result of Wednesday's earthquake.

From Boston to Worcester, people woke up to a snow-covered state. Leominster got hit with about 5 inches of snow, and the jackpot area was Holden with 6 inches. The quick-moving system pushed through overnight, limiting its impact. The snow has stopped, but it's still on the ground. And it's going to be important to get that snow out of the way before arctic temperatures move into the region later this week.

We're entering a cold but dry pattern for the week. Passing clouds are likely Sunday evening and Monday from a winter storm that's nearby. The storm will stay just south of New Jersey, with snow and strong winds from Kansas to Washington, D.C. That means delays at airports are likely through Sunday night and Monday. It remains cold and windy this week. As clouds race overhead, breezy conditions and high temperatures will touch the low 30s. You'll want to find your heavy coat.

Frigid forecast calls for the coldest air we've seen since February

After a rather wet week - we're now in a drier pattern. This air, originating from Canada, will bring the coldest air the region has seen since February. So how the sudden flip? Wednesday's air felt more tropical, and now mark's the arrival of Arctic air. This is always one of my favorite tools for visualizing why the sudden change. Wednesday's near record warmth came from Gulf of Mexico and subtropical air. But into the weekend - it's quite the opposite and coming from the Arctic Circle.
