The owner of the Port Pirie and Hobart smelters has put its hand out for government assistance, casting doubt over the future of the major employers if taxpayer-funded help isn't forthcoming. Nyrstar, which employs more than 1,000 people across its Tasmanian and South Australian operations, said it was talking to the federal and state governments about the "severity of the challenges it faces".
