    Jacques Audiard’s “Emilia Pérez,” which was recently nominated for an obscene 13 Academy Awards, is a fascinating movie largely because of how bad it is. Even discounting its myriad thematic issues, the movie is tonally confused, poorly structured and a chore to sit through. The film follows Rita, a guilt-ridden lawyer played by Zoe Saldaña, who takes on a secretive but wealthy client.

    More so than any other year in recent memory, I felt completely disconnected from the general moviegoing audience in 2024. The big studio blockbusters I liked underperformed, while the ones I hated or was ambivalent to grossed billions of dollars. Even some of the year’s more outré or obscure hits, like “The Substance,” left me unsatisfied. It also doesn’t help that many of 2024’s most acclaimed films — among them “The Brutalist,” “The Shrouds” and “No Other Land” — have yet to be widely released.

    In a recent article, Variety awards writer Clayton Davis attempted to predict which five lucky individuals will be nominated for best director at the 2025 Academy Awards. Among his predictions are some, like “Anora” auteur Sean Baker, that did in fact do great work this year. Also on the list is Jon M. Chu, director of “Wicked.”Chu is a fascinating choice for the best director award, given that everything that works about “Wicked” seems to be doing so in spite of his ill-considered guidance.

    Clemson students filed into the Barnes Center on Nov. 15 to celebrate the launch of The Chronicle’s fall 2024 issue. Clemson’s oldest student publication filled its board game-inspired magazine with multimedia contributions from contributors from various different backgrounds. For the release event, the Chronicle staff filled the Barnes Center with board games and encouraged attendees to dress as their favorite Clue characters.
