Zaheer has been a regular presence on the show for nearly 18 months, winning often and always with a huge smile. The Whitby wife and mother of two, who is a practising psychiatrist, is known for her bright dresses and ear to ear grin.

When the Liberal government announced there would be a 35 per cent decrease in the cap for international students in Canada in the 2024-25 school year and the following year, it was inevitable there would be consequences. Those consequences hit Durham College very recently as Elaine Popp, CEO of the college, announced 114 staff positions would either not be filled or would be lost due to layoffs or buyouts.

Everyone over a certain age has heard of the Jamaican bobsled team, made famous in “Cool Runnings,” the John Candy film that forever made winter sports a hit in the reggae nation. But make way, there’s a new winter team in town: The Jamaican men’s national hockey team. And it has an Oshawa connection. One of the players on the club, 19-year-old Avery Grant, has launched a GoFundMe to raise $5,000 in support of the national team.

The video is chilling. A suspect, allegly wanted for breaching her bail conditions related to a car-theft ring operating in Durham Region, is spotted at an Oshawa plaza. As a Durham police officer attempts to make an arrest on the passenger side of her vehicle, the video shows the suspect and officer briefly confront each other before the driver suddenly pulls away, dragging the officer a number of metres before she loses her grip on the door and falls to the ground.
