They held a garden party. I didn’t go. Not because I did not want to see old friends, but I wasn’t invited. I could have gone anyway, and I would have been welcomed. I, however, would have felt like the kid who showed up for the first two practices for football, dropped out and then wanted to sit up front at the victory celebration. I did not attend because I hadn’t earned my letter.

MUSCATINE, IOWA (April 1, 2024) — A Texas-style barbecue restaurant in Muscatine is where you’ll find the best pulled-pork in Iowa, according to voters in a recent social-media contest sponsored by the Iowa Pork Producers Association. Voting closed the morning of March 29 on one of the tightest final matches in Pulled Pork Madness history, with Skinny’s Barbeque holding off Barrel Smoke BBQ of Templeton.

Amateur Iowa grillers are invited to test their skills and recipes against other home chefs during the Backyard BBQ Competition, part of BBQ and Brew at the Ballpark this summer in Des Moines. Registration is open for teams to compete at the second-annual BBQ & Brew, a charitable event presented by the Iowa Pork Producers Association (IPPA) and Iowa Cubs — the Minor League Baseball team in Des Moines.

CLIVE, IOWA (March 18, 2024) — The Iowa Pork Producers Association (IPPA) will donate 4,200 pounds of ground pork to the Food Bank of Iowa in Des Moines on Tuesday, in conjunction with the Sack Hunger partnership with the football team at Iowa State University in Ames. IPPA, Farm Credit Services of America, and the Iowa Egg Council teamed up with Iowa State Cyclones football during the 2023 season.

CLIVE, IOWA (March 12, 2024) — With March Madness kicking off next week for the men’s and women’s NCAA basketball teams, the Iowa Pork Producers Association (IPPA) has launched its own bracket challenge: Pulled Pork Madness. The organization is asking the public to decide the state’s best pulled pork sandwich. The sixteen contenders were posted late Monday. In its seventh year, Pulled Pork Madness follows a bracket-style narrowing process similar to the NCAA tournament.
