The Illinois Flag Commission releases the top 10 finalists for the new state flag design contest. Relationship to Illinois: Born and raised. From 1984-2002, I spent my childhood in central Illinois, I’ve lived and worked in Bloomington/Normal for 26 of my 40 years of life. My dad, sister, niece, and the majority of my aunts and uncles are still here. All of my grandparents are buried here. I found out about this commission only days ago after spending two years abroad.

Bill Melton, the first Chicago White Sox player to hit 30 home runs in a season and the first to lead the American League in homers, died Thursday, Dec. 5, 2024, at age 79. The Sox said Melton, who played eight of his 10 major-league seasons for them, died in Phoenix after a brief illness. Art Martin, 54, builds and collects lowriders. Martin’s 1947 Chevy Fleetmaster is painted kandy brandywine with a little Corvette red thrown in. There’s also a ’47 Cadillac in his garage, black cherry. He’s working on it, hood propped open with a rod, engine gleaming. He plans to unveil it next year. His ’47 Chevy will be shown and driven — along with hundreds of other local lowriders — at the 12th annual Slow&Low: Chicago Lowrider Festival at Navy Pier, Oct. 12, 2024.

A Chicago police officer was shot and seriously wounded during a traffic stop late afternoon on June 1, 2022, in the Englewood neighborhood of Chicago. Chicago police SWAT team members search a property in the 6300 block of South Bishop Street after the officer was shot nearby.
