PHILADELPHIA -- This might be as good or better than anything Mick Abel could have ever imagined. The Phillies No. 8 prospect, according to MLB Pipeline, pitched six scoreless innings in his MLB debut as the Phillies took down the Pirates, 1-0, on Sunday afternoon at Citizens Bank Park. He struck out nine, tying Curt Simmons (1947) for the most strikeouts in an MLB debut by a Phillies pitcher since at least 1901. Abel allowed only five hits. He did not walk a single batter.

He left the game with a league-leading 0.89 WHIP. His strikeout rate (33.2 percent), walk rate (4.9 percent) and strikeout-to-walk ratio (6.66) are easily the best marks of his career. He is putting up those numbers because he is filling up the strike zone like never before. His strike-zone percentage (53.9) is the best of his career, easily eclipsing his career rate (50.6 percent).
