    Brooke Hale, 28, from Bristol, feared for her son Luca's life after he was born 12 weeks premature, weighing just 1kg with "red raw" skin and blindness in one eye. Initially, doctors suspected a rare skin condition, but tests on Brooke's placenta revealed Luca had contracted HSV1 from her - a type of herpes linked to cold sores. The initial scans at around 10 and 20 weeks showed that Luca was "healthy" with no concerns.

    A Bristol mother has shared the harrowing experience of her baby contracting oral herpes in the womb, leading to a premature birth at 12 weeks early, with the newborn appearing "burnt all over" and blind in one eye. Brooke Hale, 28, recounted the fear she felt for her son's life when Luca was born with "red raw" skin and a weight of merely two-and-a-half pounds (1kg) on December 11, 2023, at St Michael's Hospital in Bristol.

Sharon Fane, 57, a dental nurse from Thanet, Kent, and her husband Roger, 59, were forced to euthanise their beloved dog Raven after she was startled by fireworks.     A young woman diagnosed with cancer of the blood, thyroid and breast by her mid-twenties has said it inspired her to pursue a career with the NHS. Katherine Murrell, 27, from Great Dunmow, Essex, said she wanted to pursue a career in the health service after being diagnosed with stage four blood cancer and being taken to hospital with a blood clot at the age of 16. She now works for the London Ambulance Service.

    A traveller who hitchhikes all over the UK and has caught more than 200 free lifts is encouraging others to "dust off their thumbs" after saving thousands of pounds and meeting "fascinating" people. Nico Lethbridge, 26, a copywriter originally from Saffron Walden, Essex, started hitchhiking after visiting his cousin in the US in 2017 and has since caught scores of rides with strangers across the UK and abroad.
