First, there’s the buzz. Local officials are reeling with joy over NBC’s announcement that it has selected Toledo as the setting for a spinoff of its hit television series, The Office, that it plans to debut on the network’s Peacock streaming service this September. Mayor Wade Kapszukiewicz told The Blade there’s a twofold benefit if the upcoming show, called The Paper, is anywhere near as successful as The Office.

Lucas County commissioners have designated May Lupus Awareness Month as part of an ongoing campaign to help the public better understand the chronic disease that attacks mostly women but manifests itself differently in each person. Before the proclamation was passed by a 3-0 vote at Monday’s board meeting, commissioners heard how the disease has afflicted one of their own staffers, Kim Taylor, an administrative assistant to the board.

The avian extravaganza known as the Biggest Week in American Birding begins Friday. The Maumee Bay State Park Lodge & Conference Center will once again serve as the base of operations for daily field trips, tours, and hikes to such iconic birding destinations as the Magee Marsh Wildlife Area, the federal government’s Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge, and the Howard Marsh Metropark owned by Metroparks Toledo.
