Consider what’s characterized much of the last few years in boys volleyball. Needham’s dynasty. Westfield’s dynasty. Western Mass.’ surge. Wayland’s surge. A loaded Bay State Conference. New leagues showcasing success. A whole lot of parity. Those fingerprints were all over this spring, too. And yet, this season reached a rare, historic level to admire.

CAMBRIDGE – Several people asked Hamilton-Wenham girls tennis head coach Joe Maher in the preseason if the program – which turned over a significant portion of its roster – would be going for a fourth straight title. He wouldn’t even answer it because of the pressure that comes with it. Pressure didn’t seem to bother the fourth-seeded Generals much at all Sunday afternoon at MIT’s DuPont Tennis Courts, though, securing a rare four-peat with a 5-0 win over No. 6 Manchester Essex in the Div.

CAMBRIDGE – For a second year in a row, against the same fellow Cape Ann League juggernaut, the Manchester Essex boys tennis team watched on in need of just one more point to win the Div. 4 state final Sunday afternoon at MIT’s DuPont Tennis Courts – this time from one of their two doubles teams amid three-set thrillers.

WORCESTER – Ahead of Saturday’s Div. 2 softball state final, Silver Lake head coach Tony Pina was quoted suggesting that for as much as his group needed to beat Massachusetts Gatorade Player of the Year Alyx Rossi, third-seeded Bedford needed to beat ace Delaney Moquin – and his money was on Moquin.

WESTWOOD – The Needham boys volleyball team started Friday night firing on all cylinders on a stage the program – making its fifth straight Div. 1 state final appearance – is quite used to. But Brookline, in its first trip since it last won a state championship in 1992, wouldn’t be denied of the ultimate glory any longer.

Only two times Wayland has reached the state final were in 2017 & 2024. Both times, it lost to Westfield. Warriors were motivated all year by last year’s reverse sweep loss. Chance at revenge tonight. Westfield beat Wayland 3-0 in regular season, but star OH Finn Bell was out.
Needham and/or Westfield 🏐 have reached the state final every state tourney since 2014. Needham’s trips - 2015🏆, 2016, 2018, 2021🏆, 2022🏆, 2023🏆, 2024 Westfield’s trips - 2015, 2017🏆, 2018🏆, 2019🏆, 2022🏆, 2023, 2024🏆 Natick & Wayland look to snap the streak tonight.
