In Japan, too, the home of deflation for 40 years, prices are rising at a similar pace. This combination of policy uncertainty and inflation is the principal reason why bond yields are rising even as interest rates are flat or expected to modestly fall. The longer a bond has until it is due to be repaid, the more compensation investors are demanding. This is why the long bonds that are a staple of many pension funds are feeling the pinch.

In 2019, a group of scientists led by Owen Toon, a professor of atmospheric and oceanic sciences at the University of Colorado Boulder, modelled the climatic effects of a nuclear conflict between India and Pakistan in 2025. The hypothetical scenario was a militant attack on the Indian parliament, leading to mobilisation along the Line of Control. Skirmishes in Kashmir escalate and the Indian army crosses into Pakistan, prompting a nuclear war.

The decade that followed was not easy for investors. The S&P 500 fell almost 40pc between 1973 and 1974. While they bounced back in nominal terms, measured on an inflation-adjusted basis, even including dividends, big US stocks lost 1.4pc a year through a decade of sluggish growth and persistent inflation.

Trump talks of putting the US economy behind a great tariff wall, but he also wants deals, which means he needs dealers. America’s official chief diplomat is the secretary of state, Marco Rubio, but so far his activities have been fairly limited.
