SC billfish anglers busy in May with four tournaments

Offshore anglers have already been releasing blue marlin and sailfish in a recreational pursuit, but they will be a little more competitive in their offshore excursions now that May is here. The fourth annual South Carolina Blue Marlin Invitational got underway May 1, and three of the 2025 South Carolina Governor's Cup Billfishing Series tournaments are being fished this month, making for a lot of offshore excursions.

There's nothing like catching your first fish. I can remember my first fish, and I'll bet 2-year-old Maddy Thomas won't forget her first fish. Maddy, her sister and three cousins enjoyed a Good Friday family tradition when her grandfather, Rusty Thomas, took the five grandchildren to a spot near St. George where they spent several hours hooking and releasing bream and bass. Late golfer Jay Sigel came to Charleston often to compete

Golf lost one of its great champions April 19 when Jay Sigel died from complications of pancreatic cancer at the age of 81. Sigel, a Pennsylvania native, was the first golfer to attend Wake Forest on an Arnold Palmer scholarship, and it was at Wake Forest where an unfortunate accident directed his future to amateur golf. He was leaning against a glass door when someone inadvertently slammed the door and his left hand crashed through the glass.

Daniel Island fifth grader finishes second in Drive, Chip and Putt age group

Eloise Fetzer, a fifth grader at Daniel Island School, pulled off a tie for second the Girls 10-11 age group in the nationally televised Drive, Chip and Putt national finals held April 6 at Augusta National Golf Club. Representing the East region, Fetzer, 10, scored 19 points and tied with Penelope Philip of the Great Lakes region. Balla Simoes of the Southeast region won the Girls 10-11 age group with a score of 24. This was Fetzer's second trip to the national finals.
SC Outdoor Press Association announces Youth Outdoor Writing Competition

The South Carolina Outdoor Press Association (SCOPE) is partnering with the Hampton Wildlife Fund and South Carolina Wildlife magazine to sponsor the South Carolina Youth Outdoor Writing Competition. The competition is open to high school students in grades 9-12. The target audience will be entries from South Carolina, but entries from any state are eligible for the competition. Entries will be 300-500 words in length, and topics include any outdoor subject that is presented in a positive manner.

You still might find the water temperature a little chilly if you decide to dip more than your toes in the water if you head to the beach on one of these warm spring days. But you might forget about the cool water if you brought along some fishing tackle and have a nice fish tugging on your line. One of the great things about Lowcountry living is the opportunity to find a secluded spot on shore, cast a bait into the water and hook a fish.

Former Boston College golfer Christian Cavaliere entered Sunday's final round of the Azalea Invitational golf tournament with a two-shot advantage and never let anyone get any closer as he polished off the victory with a bogey-free final-round 67 for a 12-under total of 272. Cavaliere, 27, finished three shots ahead of Preston Hage, a high school junior from Raleigh who also closed with a 67.
Fetzer to compete in Drive, Chip and Putt finals April 6

Eloise Fetzer of Daniel Island is one of 80 junior golfers who will compete April 6 in the finals of Drive, Chip and Putt at Augusta National Golf Club. Fetzer, 10, will compete in the Girls 10-11 age group. The event will be broadcast live on The Golf Channel. Fetzer, who qualified in 2023 and finished seventh in the Girls 7-9 age group, made it through three stages of qualifying to advance to Augusta National.
South Carolina's turkey season opens Thursday

A reminder to South Carolina's turkey hunters of major changes as the season opens later this week. • There is no longer a split season with different dates for different parts of the state. There is now a statewide season that runs from April 3 through May 3. • The bag limit has been reduced to two birds per hunter for residents and nonresidents, no more than one per day, no more than one prior to April 10. • There is now a prohibition on the harvest of Jakes, or juvenile turkeys.
