You seldom see a professional bass fisherman jump eight spots in a single day, but that's what Bassmaster Elite pro Patrick Walters of Eutawville did on May 18, the final day of fishing on the Sabine River in Orange, Texas. The Sabine River was a tough venue for the pros, but Walters managed to sneak into the top 10 that fish on Sunday in the Bassmaster Elite Series.

When Connor Doyal moved to Charleston two years ago, it was because he wanted to live by the water, enjoy some really good food and rediscover his love of golf. Place check marks by all three of those reasons, particularly golf. Doyal, now 26, went to school at Auburn but did not play for the Tigers. After graduation, he moved to Atlanta for a year and a half, then decided to move to Charleston.

Brody Bates Youth Redfish Open awards $33,000 in scholarships

Thanks to the expansion into the Lowcountry by the Student Angler League Tournament Trail, the sixth annual Brody Bates Youth Redfish Open drew a record 22 teams. The student anglers from grades 1-12, earned $33,000 in scholarships at the tournament, fished out of Buck Hall in McClellanville, and a donation also was made to the Brody Bates Foundation that provides scholarships for youth who have lost a sibling.

Kieron van Wyk, College of Charleston's outstanding senior from South Africa, added another major honor when he finished atop the 2024-25 Bridgestone APGA Collegiate Ranking. Golf lost one of its great champions April 19 when Jay Sigel died from complications of pancreatic cancer at the age of 81. Sigel, a Pennsylvania native, was the first golfer to attend Wake Forest on an Arnold Palmer scholarship, and it was at Wake Forest where an unfortunate accident directed his future to amateur golf. He was leaning against a glass door when someone inadvertently slammed the door and his left hand crashed through the glass.

Daniel Island fifth grader finishes second in Drive, Chip and Putt age group

Eloise Fetzer, a fifth grader at Daniel Island School, pulled off a tie for second the Girls 10-11 age group in the nationally televised Drive, Chip and Putt national finals held April 6 at Augusta National Golf Club. Representing the East region, Fetzer, 10, scored 19 points and tied with Penelope Philip of the Great Lakes region. Balla Simoes of the Southeast region won the Girls 10-11 age group with a score of 24. This was Fetzer's second trip to the national finals.
