Police are investigating the deaths of two people found Wednesday, April 9, in a home on Route 100 in Eden, calling the incident a homicide and subsequent suicide. Vermont State Police on Friday afternoon say Karol Buchanon, 70, was shot and killed by her husband David Buchanon, 78, who later shot and killed himself. The Chief Medical Examiner's office ruled both deaths were caused by gunshot wounds to the head.

Police are investigating the deaths of two people found Wednesday, April 9, in a home on Route 100 in Eden. Vermont State Police, in a press release Wednesday evening, stated the names of the two people would not be released until their relatives were notified and pending further investigation. “Everyone involved in this incident is believed to be accounted for, and there is no identified threat to the community,” the release stated.

The Vermont Community Newspaper Group took home 35 reporting, design and photographer awards — including 15 first-place finishes — at the New England Better Newspaper Competition. The accolades included a nod to staff writer Aaron Calvin, who was named the 2024 New England reporter of the year. The awards ceremony, put on by the New England Newspaper and Press Association, was held Saturday night in Portland, Maine, and capped off the 2025 New England Newspaper Convention.

A woman who previously pleaded guilty to three misdemeanor crimes also was sentenced two weeks ago for felony Medicaid fraud. Kristen Connolly, 56, of Jeffersonville, Vermont, was sentenced Feb. 24 in Vermont Superior Court, Lamoille Criminal Division, on the charge of and felony Medicaid fraud after also pleading guilty to misdemeanor abuse of a vulnerable adult, driving under the influence and leaving the scene of a crash.

Peoples Academy Nordic teams wrapped up their race season last week in a tale of two temperatures. The Nordic state championships are contested over two days of racing. Day 1 was freestyle and took place at Craftsbury Outdoor Center on Feb. 20. “The day opened clear and cold with a hard and expertly groomed 5k course,” assistant coach Mark Isselhardt said.
