Today has been the hottest day of the year so far and hottest day in Ireland for three years, with Met Éireann recording a temperature of 29.6C in Co Roscommon this afternoon. The temperature was recorded at Mount Dillon, which yesterday also saw highs of 27C. The forecaster said today's figure marks the highest temperature since August 2022. It comes as warnings are being reiterated for people to stay safe in the sun and water during the current hot spell.

Temperatures in the UK are expected to rise to 33C this weekend, with human-caused climate change blamed for increasing the chances of such extreme heat. According to a study from the World Weather Attribution (WWA) group at Imperial College London, the UK heatwave will be about two to four degrees hotter as a direct result of climate change.

A member of Irish rap trio Kneecap is due to appear before Westminster Magistrates' Court in London. Last month British Police confirmed that Liam Óg Ó hAnnaidh, whose stage name is Mo Chara, was charged with a terrorism offence. He is alleged to have displayed of a flag in support of Hezbollah at a gig at the O2 Forum in Kentish town in north London on 21 November last year. London's Metropolitan Police was made aware of an online video from the event last April.

The family of an 87-year-old Irish man who died after he was attacked while walking home in north London last month have described him as a "real gentleman". John Mackey had been running errands on the afternoon of 6 May when he was set upon near Goodchild Road. He had just been to his local supermarket and kebab shop. The pensioner sustained head injuries and died in hospital two days later. A man was arrested and charged with Mr Mackey's murder and robbery.
