CanterburyDistrictsMid CanterburyOn April 3, 1972, a ball of fire with a long tail was seen falling from the sky over Canterbury - and soon after it appeared a strange metal sphere was found lying in a field near Ashburton. The sphere weighed 13.6kg, had a diameter of 380mm, and left a hole in the ground 150mm deep.

The past and present Mid Canterbury Transport staff will meet at the Hotel Ashburton on April 5. About 35 people have registered so far, including Barry Sumner of Temuka who will have a restored Mid Canterbury Transport truck at the event.

    Beybladers young and old are preparing for battle this weekend in downtown Ashburton. Clash X, a Beyblade X social tournament, will be held at the Flashbacks arcade and restaurant on Sunday at 173 Burnett St. It starts at 1pm. It will be the first public event hosted by Beyblade Ashburton, which was set up this year by enthusiast Alehana Taupe of Ashburton. He is keen to meet other people interested in the craze. Products, spot prizes and bragging rights will be up for grabs.

    Illegal rubbish dumping in Canterbury has raised the ire of a town’s volunteer beautification group. In their first outing of the year, Litter Free Ashburton members found a large black bag filled with "revolting" rubbish north of town. The bag was just one of the rubbish items discovered in what has been described as ‘‘horrible, illegal and very deliberate dumping’’.
