In 1948, the United Nations adopted the Genocide Convention, which clearly defines genocide as actions intended to destroy a group—such as forcibly transferring children from one group to another. This is exactly what happened with us. These were not random events; they were planned and carried out by the government to break apart Indigenous families and communities.

I would love to write a piece about just how good late-season hunting can be, particularly when you get the type of weather patterns that drive bucks to feed well before sunset and fill ag fields to the brim with whitetails. When that takes place, the waning days of the season can certainly be some of the very best of the year. But, alas, I can't do it. Why? Because I simply don't have a whole lot of experience with that situation to relay. In fact, quite the opposite has shown to be true.

For every chase-filled, buck-laden, rut-crazed day I've had while hunting in November, I've had probably two dozen that were as dull as televised golf. Truth is, as much as I love bowhunting whitetails in November, I must also admit that it can be one of the most frustrating periods of the deer season. Why? Because the rut, by its very nature, ebbs and flows. It can also be heavily impacted by external forces, with hunting pressure at the top of that list.

As a whitetail deer hunting fanatic, I find it hard to admit that there might be a better month than November. The fact is, however, October might be it. This statement does come with its share of caveats, including the biggest of them all: hunting pressure. As one who will spend about 90 percent of my time hunting public ground in an average year, hunting pressure dictates everything, including whether or not October is a better choice than oft-favored November.

For some bowhunters, September ushers in the first opening day of the year. For others, the start of bow season is still a few weeks away. Regardless of which camp you're in, this is likely true: There are still a few last-minute tasks to attend to before things get really serious. I admit to fully being in that boat. No matter how much I plan, I seem to be always scrambling to finalize details as a new season begins. There's also another bit of truth to be had here.

Learn more ›_Hiking into a hunting area with a tree stand strapped to my back is a labor of love that I’ve endured many, many times. It’s also one that I don’t need to endure again, thanks to saddle hunting. Backcountry hunting from a tree saddle instead of a tree stand has taken the deer hunting world by storm—and for good reason.

With bowhunting season just a month or so away for many whitetail hunters, preseason scouting efforts are in full swing. Because of this, I'm far more likely to fill a few whitetail tags this fall. There's an important distinction to make here ... my bowhunting success will not come because of my preseason scouting efforts. It'll come as a result of yours. I have no preseason plans aside from continuing to spend the last few weeks of summer chasing smallmouth bass around.

The benefits of a mobile bowhunting setup receive the most focus during the rut-packed periods of October and November, but the greatest tactical advantages provided by a mobile approach aren't witnessed in those prime months of whitetail bliss. They shine brightest when temperatures are at their lowest, food sources are at their scarcest and hunting pressure has reached its fever pitch, having a major impact on the natural movement patterns of the entire deer herd in a given area.

The rut is a magical time. It's also a time that can be filled with frustration, missteps and blunders. Trust me, I know. The focus of this column is simple: highlight three rut hunts that went awry. The tough part? Narrowing down my myriad of errors to just three. Let's dive in. There are lessons to be learned. I have always considered myself to be a fairly aggressive type of hunter.
