Charles will welcome Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani and the first of his three wives, Sheikha Jawaher, during a ceremony of pomp and pageantry staged in Whitehall. But missing will be Queen Camilla who, on Monday evening, pulled out of the official open-air greeting on Horse Guards Parade and a carriage ride back to Buckingham Palace, due to lingering effects of a recent viral chest infection.

Kate was mentioned in the Court Circular following a meeting at Windsor Castle on Tuesday to discuss the upcoming event with her team and representatives from her Royal Foundation.

The King and Queen took part in the annual Garter Day service at Windsor Castle, marking the start of a busy summer for the royals. Charles and Camilla led other members of the Royal family at the traditional celebration commemorating the ancient Order of the Garter on Monday, 17 June. This comes just two days after the Trooping the Colour ceremony where Catherine the Princess of Wales made he first public appearance since being diagnosed with cancer. Kate Middleton did not attend Garter Day.

The King and Queen will be hoping their thoroughbred horse will bring them sporting glory when it joins the runners in one of racing's prestigious events. Charles and Camilla arrived at Epsom to see their horse Treasure race in The Oaks, a classic twice won by Queen Elizabeth II. The royal couple were greeted by their racing adviser John Warren, who introduced them to senior executives from the racecourse before they made their way to the royal box.

King Charles is set to return to public duties just months after being diagnosed with cancer. In a statement issued on Friday Buckingham Palace said treatment for the disease had seen " a positive effect". It was announced in February that the King had been found to have cancer during treatment for an enlarged prostate. The type of cancer has not been disclosed however the Palace said it was not prostate cancer. Since his diagnosis he has been receiving care as an outpatient.

Queen Camilla has stepped in for King Charles at a major event as the monarch continues his cancer treatment. She will be handing out the traditional Royal Maundy Money on behalf of her husband during the pre-Easter service at Worcester Cathedral. This is thought to be the first time a monarch's spouse has been given this responsibility. While not at Worcester Cathedral for the Royal Maundy Service because of his cancer treatment, King Charles' words were played.
