The National WWII Museum said Thursday that it plans to further expand its "education corridor" on Magazine Street after the donation of property from the the Arlene and Joseph Meraux Charitable Foundation. The three adjoining properties in the 900 block of Magazine Street are adjacent to the museum's John E. Kushner Restoration Pavilion, which is located across the street from the museum-owned Higgins Hotel.

The 175-foot-high poles supporting the driving range netting have been visible to drivers on nearby Interstate 10 for months, as have the colorful targets that golfers aim for from the three decks of high-tech driving bays in the main building.

A long-touted project to rehabilitate the blighted former Naval base in Bywater and turn the main building into nearly 300 apartments at subsidized rents has cleared its final financing hurdles and should soon begin construction, according to city and federal officials. On March 28, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development approved the key loan guarantee needed to secure part of the $166 million financing package for the project.
