The signs dotted around the idyllic village of Thelnetham in Suffolk are decidedly uninviting. One reads: “Serious fowl play, stay away!” In the village hall, around a dozen residents gather to explain: they are standing against a planning proposal that would replace a local pig farm with broiler chicken breeding units. Nothing fascinates Monica Biondo more than the animals often referred to as the ocean’s “living jewels” — the vividly colored little fishes who dance around in its waters. Biondo, a Swiss marine biologist, became enamored with ocean life as a child after spending many summers snorkeling along the Italian coastline. Nowadays you’re more likely to find her deep-diving into trade records than marine waters.

As one councillor put it, "It's a tradition that's had its day."Wymondham Town Council considered the proposed parade during a meeting on 3 September. The Dunston Harriers have been parading through the town's marketplace on Boxing Day for many years, with most councillors voting the event throughin previous years.
