I was wrong about Tyrese Haliburton. In my defense, so were a lot of people, and I think I was wrong for the right reasons, but, yeah, still wrong. As Haliburton’s draft prospects improved during his sophomore season at Iowa State, I began to wonder if the perception was starting to out-run reality. When that 2019-20 season started, I was actually more bullish on Haliburton than the consensus.

The last four years have been something of a tough-to-explain phenomenon for Iowa State athletics. Never before has money so nakedly been the key to success in college sports. Yet the Cyclones, whom no one would confuse with the upper financial crust of the industry, have enjoyed incredible success.

There are countless ways to measure the success of Iowa State basketball over the last 15 years. There are the NCAA Tournament appearances (11). You can tally Big 12 Tournament titles (five). How about Sweet 16s (also five)? You could start recounting moments (Georges Niang’s kiss to Iowa, Lindell Wigginton’s dunk against Oklahoma, Deonte Burton’s Big 12 tourney alley-oop), but that list is going to get long quick.

HUMBOLDT – The 2024-25 season delivered plenty for the Iowa State women’s basketball team. Some humbling times. Moments of triumph. There was frustration and disappointment, too, I would imagine, after being unable to meet the expectations that come with a top-10 ranking to start the year and a First Four appearance to end it. But, as the Cyclones move forward, the season also provided some clarity on exactly where they stood in the national conversation. Mostly, just outside it. Need a break?

We already have a serious “Ban Replay” schism in my house with this Fever/Sun ending extending bedtime into infinity.

Saw someone getting their entire front yard sodded today so will be interesting to see how this goes over an extended period of time — Buckle up. Des Moines's lawn watering ban is cutting demand, but unlikely to end soon. https://t.co/lAm1Yxjgpu via @DMRegister
