March is finally upon us, and Vanderbilt Men’s Basketball is dancing for the first time in eight years. Head coach Mark Byington has orchestrated a masterful turnaround in his first year at the helm of Vanderbilt’s basketball program, going 20-12 (8-10 SEC). Few people saw Byington’s success coming, and the Commodores were even picked to finish last in the SEC after a 9-23 (4-14) 2023-24 season.

The success of Vanderbilt Men’s Basketball has come as a shock to many this season. Head coach Mark Byington has brought together a band of ten transfers with just two returning players and has led this renovated squad to a 13-2 record through the first two weeks of SEC play. While the performance of individual players may not be as surprising, the team’s ability to form elite chemistry and create a new identity in such a short amount of time is simply incredible.

The second NBA in-season tournament — rebranded as the Emirates NBA Cup this year— and so are the six ‘Dores in the NBA. If Nov. 19’s Celtics-Cavaliers matchup is a sign of a larger trend, this year’s NBA Cup could be even more intense than last year’s inaugural tournament. After Tuesday’s action, teams are now halfway through group play, and now is as good a time as any to see just how Vanderbilt’s alumni are faring at this point in the season.

After an unfathomable win over No. 1 Alabama, Vanderbilt students carried the goalpost from the stadium to the Cumberland River. 39 minutes ago Last Saturday will go down in history for Vanderbilt Football. The Commodores came away from their clash with No. 1 Alabama on Oct. 5 with a 40-35 victory, marking the program’s first-ever defeat of a top-5 ranked team.

Five teams on a bye week? Not a problem for the Southeastern Conference which saw some crazy finishes over the weekend. The golden matchup of Georgia and Alabama lived up to the hype, Kentucky came away with an impressive upset win over No. 6 Ole Miss and top-25 ranked teams Oklahoma and Texas A&M both came away with close wins against Auburn and Arkansas, respectively.

Vanderbilt was a few plays away from its biggest win in years on Saturday, but it came up just short after kicker Brock Taylor missed a 31-yard field goal wide left. While this was a heartbreaking loss, the team’s grit to remain in the game against Missouri — ranked No. 7 in the country before the game — should not be overlooked. Nonetheless, the double overtime, 30-27 loss saw the Black and Gold fall to 2-2 on the season, which comes as a disappointment after a 2-0 start.

Vanderbilt Soccer remains undefeated six matches into the season following last week’s contests against Kansas and Middle Tennessee. The Commodores drew the Jayhawks 0-0 on Thursday night. They handily defeated the Blue Raiders on Sunday in a 3-0 rout as Rachel Deresky and Caroline Betts each finished the game with three goals or assists. After two more shutouts, goalie Sara Wojdelko now has five clean sheets on the season through six games played.

Vanderbilt Football earned a massive win on Saturday, defeating the Virginia Tech Hokies 34-27. While the Commodores’ pass rush did an excellent job of keeping opposing quarterback Kyron Drones in check, the offense still had to carry its weight. With the help of sophomore running back Sedrick Alexander and New Mexico State transfer quarterback Diego Pavia, Vanderbilt did just that.
