The Summit County Fiscal Officer is responsible for four government divisions that manage taxation and licensing:The Auditor Division disburses the county’s taxes, which amount to more than $1 billion collected each year. The division also assists residents with property appraisals and real estate taxes.

Democratic incumbent Tavia Galonski is facing Republican challenger Katie Reed for the Summit County Clerk of Courts job. Galonski was appointed to the role in January after Sandra Kurt, her predecessor, was elected to serve as clerk of the Akron Municipal Court. Galonski is running for her first full term as the county clerk.

A collaborative effort between the City of Akron and Akron Public Schools is aimed at making it easier for students to walk and bike to school. Akron Public Schools was recently named one of 19 Ohio school districts to receive state funds for projects aimed at enhancing safety. Improvements and renovations range from sidewalks, signage and updated pavement markings for pedestrian crossings to curb ramps, crosswalks and light poles.

In an emotional Monday meeting, members of the Akron Board of Education questioned who should be responsible for transporting some of Akron’s most vulnerable students this fall. Van drivers hired by the district transport unhoused students, children with special needs and sports teams. The district contracted with 143 independent contractors during the 2023-24 school year, said Brandy Vickers, who serves as a spokesperson for the group. The district also worked with at least two companies.

The Akron Public Schools’ Board of Education on Monday evening voted to reject a third-party company as its new transportation vendor — following impassioned pleas from independent van drivers who for decades have transported special needs and other students. For now, the measure leaves the contract unfulfilled for next school year.

Robert Lyons has logged more than a million miles during his decade as a van driver for Akron Public Schools, operating six vehicles — four minivans and two SUVs — as he transported nearly 500 children. His days typically start around 4 a.m. Depending on the number of students he will be picking up, Lyons devises a game plan, accounting for road closures, inclement weather and other factors. He also shares estimated arrival times with parents.
