Kemp Boyd said during last month’s Akron Citizens’ Police Oversight Board meeting that he had asked to help interview candidates who may fill three of his board’s positions. Boyd, the oversight board’s chair, has asked before. During two previous interview cycles for open seats, the city denied his request.

A miniature version of U.S. Rep. Emilia Sykes made a grand appearance Friday afternoon at Helen Arnold Community Learning Center, part of Akron’s celebration of Black History Month. Third grader Italy Pullman walked on stage in a pinstripe skirt suit, black shirt and low-top platform Vans accented by pearls. “I’m a leader from Akron, Ohio, and a Congresswoman who works hard to make sure everyone has access to good jobs, healthcare and safe communities.

Murphy explained that while there are times when swift action is more appropriate than passive — when lives are immediately in danger — he agreed in general with Jones, a sophomore at Buchtel Community Learning Center.
