    Three projects to build more than 140 housing units in or near Akron’s downtown were awarded more than $12 million in Ohio tax credits Wednesday. All three projects will transform former office and industrial space into housing: the Akron Soap Co. and Federal Warehouse buildings and two former B.F. Goodrich buildings that are part of the Canal Place complex at the south end of downtown.

    A program that will help some renters avoid evictions by making lawyers available to represent them was approved Monday by Akron City Council. In a 13-0 vote, council members agreed to spend $250,000 annually for three years, beginning this fall, on a pilot program intended to reduce the number of evictions. The program is slated to start Sept. 1.

    A three-year pilot program that could help tenants avoid eviction will be presented today to Akron City Council. The program, called Right to Counsel, would spend $250,000 annually to provide attorneys to help keep low-income residents housed. Similar programs exist in other cities and have been effective, said Ryan Maxwell, a managing attorney for Community Legal Aid Services who helped with planning.

When Anderson lived in Cleveland, he thought it was neat to see warehouses transformed into residential lofts. He always wanted to do a project himself. “I thought it was pretty cool that you could turn something old and make it new and modern,” the Akron resident said.

    Ohio’s attorney general signed off on an agreement Wednesday that will sell the nonprofit Summa Health to a venture capital-funded, for-profit company. In doing so, he upped the hospital’s sales price and placed guardrails on the acquisition that will help ensure Summa continues to operate in the community.
