Gauteng Finance and Economic Development MEC Lebogang Maile says more than 4600 certificates of acceptability have been issued to owners of food outlets including spaza shops. The documents have been issued since the registration deadline on Friday. They confirm the compliance of a business to basic food safety and hygiene requirements. Addressing a media briefing in Johannesburg today, Maile says only 128 permits have been issued to foreign nationals.

Advocacy group, Section27, has called on government to build more schools in an effort to resolve learner placement issues. This comes as many Gauteng parents queue at education district offices this morning hoping to secure school placements for their children. Since the inception of the online school registration system in 2016, learner placements have been a major point of concern as many end up without a school in the new year despite having applied before the deadline.

Social media personality Musa Khawula is expected back in the Randburg District Court in Johannesburg on Tuesday next week for a formal bail application. The 33-year-old appeared in the same court yesterday facing Crimen Injuria, Contravention of the Cyber Crimes Act and Hate Speech charges. The accused is alleged to have posted derogatory statements on social media in October last year against businessman Zee Nxumalo.

A truck driver has died after two trucks collided on the N12 eastbound between Edenvale Road on ramp and Kraft Road off ramp in Edenvale in Ekurhuleni. Emergency services personnel say one truck had been stationery before it was hit from behind by another truck. The stationery truck driver escaped with no injuries. Ekurhuleni Emergency Services spokesperson William Ntladi has urged motorists to use alternative routes.

Police have arrested five suspects including late former President Nelson Mandela’s grandchild for possession of a hijacked vehicle and an unlicensed firearm. The vehicle was recovered at Mandela’s former home in Houghton, Johannesburg. Johannesburg Metro Police received information regarding the location of a white Toyota Corolla that was hijacked along Louis Botha Avenue earlier on Wednesday.
