PHILADELPHIA — Brandon Marsh took the field at Citizens Bank Park for early batting practice, searching for a better feeling in the batter’s box with a brutal 0-for-26 stretch at the plate hanging over his head. The outfielder will not be in the lineup as the Phillies open a four-game series with the Giants on Monday to start off a seven-game homestand. Manager Rob Thomson will give him a chance to reset. Marsh believes he’ll need to work to find better results moving forward.

Kyle Schwarber defied the numbers. Facing Atlanta ace Chris Sale, the reigning National League Cy Young Award winner who held left-handed batters to a .544 OPS last season, Schwarber teed off on Tuesday night. The Phillies slugger singled in the top of the first inning off Sale, ripped a triple to center field in the third and launched a 462-foot home run in the fifth. Schwarber finished 3-for-3 with a walk and was a double shy of the cycle, while Nick Castellanos was 3-for-4 with two doubles.

Griff McGarry, a former top pitching prospect who’s fallen off the radar over the past few years, turned in an eye-catching outing to start the 2025 season. Pitching for Double-A Reading for the first time since 2023, McGarry tossed four perfect innings in his season debut for the Fightin Phils on Sunday. The right-hander struck out eight batters in a 3-2 Reading loss on his way to being named the Eastern League Pitcher of the Week.

PHILADELPHIA — Edmundo Sosa was quickly tested in his first outfield appearance in exactly two years, and he did what he needed in order to pass. After pinch hitting for the Phillies in the bottom of the eighth inning on Saturday afternoon, the natural infielder stayed in the game to play center field in the top of the ninth. The first batter, Dodgers second baseman Tommy Edman, smoked a 100.8 mph liner that Sosa smoothly corralled.

PHILADELPHIA — Catcher J.T. Realmuto battled the tiniest of wounds during the Phillies’ bout between National League heavyweights against the red-hot Dodgers. The umpires had to briefly stop the game during the top of the ninth inning as Realmuto dealt with the blood coming out of a cut on his finger. A few batters later, the veteran backstop gripped the ball and fired a strike to second base to throw out a runner to end it.
