The closure, which began Wednesday, is in response to resident safety concerns about cut-through traffic. Drivers are advised to plan alternate routes and watch for signage. The IRONMAN 70.3 Gulf Coast race in Panama City Beach was shortened due to severe weather. The swim portion of the race was canceled due to double red flags. Participants still received medals despite the shortened race. PANAMA CITY BEACH — Rain, wind and thunder was a damper on the IRONMAN 70.3 Gulf Coast race in Panama City Beach on May 10. Organizers shut down the event an hour to hour and a half short, out of the interest of safety for participants, volunteers and onlookers.

They're ba-ack − to raise their young! Beachgoers should be prepared to share the shoreline with birds that are laying their eggs in the sand. In Florida, the Bay County Audubon Society is urging beach visitors to be careful around the nesting coastal birds so they have a safe space to raise their fledglings. While some birds lay their eggs in tree nests, sea and shorebirds lay their eggs right on the sand, where they are very well camouflaged, the organization said.
