Friday, April 4, and Saturday April 5 was the 2025 MC Team Pond Rocket Cup Hockey Tournament, held at the Vankleek Hill Community Centre and the Robert Hartley Sports Complex in Hawkesbury. There were 44 teams competing for the cup this year, which was ultimately won on Saturday, April 5 by PSF in a 4-3 final against Desja Plaizz in the Duval Ventures Championship Division. The Beauts defeated three-time defending champions Chicks With Sticks 5-1 in the Starhill Farms Ladies Division.

A renowned artist who made her home in Vankleek Hill now has a room named after her at the Arbor Gallery. On Saturday, March 22, the Pemberton-Smith Room at the gallery was officially dedicated in honour of Freda Pemberton Smith. Arbor Gallery moved to its current location at 103 High Street in Vankleek Hill. “What better name that the Pemberton Smith Room for this exhibition space after her contribution to Vankleek Hill,” said Arbor Gallery Artistic Director Andrea Belcham.

A family curling tradition that started in Vankleek Hill has celebrated its 40th anniversary. In 1983, the family of Vincent and Gladys Conway of Vankleek Hill began having an annual curling bonspiel. According to Erin Conway, one of the couple’s granddaughters, it was intended to be a fun afternoon with some family. “My Uncle Brent who taught curling and enjoyed playing it thought it would be a great social event for the family,” she said.

Local skills and knowledge are part of the Blue Ghost spacecraft which recently landed the Moon. Vasily Piccone, 24, grew up in Hawkesbury. His parents are Louis and Elena Piccone. He attended Vankleek Hill Collegiate Institute (VCI) for grades nine and 10, and graduated from St. Francis-Xavier Catholic High School in Hammond. The McGill University graduate, who has a degree in Electrical Engineering, now works for Firefly Aerospace of Austin, Texas.

St. John the Apostle Anglican Church and the St. John’s Anglican Church Women (ACW) in Vankleek Hill have contributed $1,000 to the Maxville Manor redevelopment project. The Maxville Manor Foundation is recognizing the church as one of its 100 Maxville Manor Friends Who Care as part of the fundraising campaign to completely redevelop the not-for-profit long-term care facility.
