An Oakland business is calling on city council and local lawmakers to take action after repeated break-ins that did more than $100,000 in damages. Qué Rico Nightclub on 15th Street has been broken into 11 times in three years, with the latest incident reported earlier this week. A local group is on a mission to clean up the streets of Oakland and prevent illegal dumping in some of the city's hardest hit areas. Illegal dumping is nothing new in the East Bay. In fact, Vincent Ray Williams co-founded the Urban Compassion Project to help address the issue five years ago. The union representing Oakland teachers said Tuesday its members will walk off the job for a daylong action this Thursday if the district doesn't immediately meet their demands. The potential strike would be the union’s fourth since 2019 and would come less than two years since the last strike shut schools down for eight days.

BART says its trains are safer, cleaner and more accessible for riders than they've been in quite some time. The transit agency on Wednesday highlighted new numbers showing violent crime on the system has dropped by 23% in the first three months of the year. BART officials and newly-elected Congresswoman Lateefah Simon, a former BART board president, toured the 19th Street Oakland BART station Wednesday to outline some of the changes meant to make the system safer.
