Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass, who promised to address the homelessness crisis in the city during her 2022 mayoral campaign, celebrated the official opening of the Wilcox, an affordable-living apartment building for unhoused seniors Monday morning. Bass, alongside project funders, praised the 62-unit building, located on Kenmore Ave in East Hollywood, as a successfully expedited development in the initiative to create over 7,000 affordable homes in the city.

With September 10 kicking off National Suicide Prevention Week, students are calling for more awareness about the counseling and mental health resources available for USC students. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported in 2020 that suicide was the third leading cause of death for individuals between 15 to 24 years old in the United States. The CDC found that there were approximately 49,449 total suicide deaths in 2022, marking a 2.6% increase since 2021.

The LBCC commencement ceremony may look different this year, with professional name readers and symbolic, silent protests in support of terminated LBCC counselor Kashara Moore. When the part-time employee was fired by the board of trustees last year for mispronouncing graduates’ names and allegedly elbowing a student onstage during commencement, many faculty and staff showed their support for their colleague and their disappointment in the board’s decision.

23 graduates and their families attended the small and intimate 2023 Lavender graduation ceremony to represent and celebrate the accomplishments of LGBTQ+ students on Friday. Organizer and LBCC professor Jerome Hunt explained his belief in the need for events that celebrate LGBTQ youth now more than ever. As attitudes toward the LGBTQ community have begun to worsen, so have attempts at legislation that negatively impacts them.

Winners of the 2023 Jacaranda and Donald Drury awards read their entries in LAC’s P building courtyard last Thursday, exploring grief, the supernatural and the horrors of chattel slavery. Students featured in the Jacaranda Essay Contest were recognized for their 2022-2023 school year accomplishments based on persuasive, expository and literature essays with honorable mentions. For the Donald Drury Creative Writing contest, students submitted original fiction and poetry for consideration.

Inside the Nordic Lounge at the LAC campus, 50 attendees excitedly waited for the first-ever LBCC APID cultural fashion show on Thursday from 5:30-7:30 p.m. APID is the acronym that represents Asian, Pacific Islander and Desi or Indian groups and the month of May has been dedicated as APID Month. In particular, LBCC represents and celebrates the month with the theme of amplification through unification, which intends to unify students of color through events, clubs and meetings.
