California lawmakers are proposing a bill that would allow local governments to create hospitality zones allowing bars and restaurants to stay open until 4 a.m. starting January 1st, 2026. The Intuit Dome, the new $2 billion home of the Los Angeles Clippers which opened in August, is currently the only alcohol serving venue in the state able to stay open past 2 a.m after Governor Gavin Newsom signed a bill last year allowing the exemption.

For the first time ever, a major league baseball game was played in West Sacramento. Thousands of fans flocked to Sutter Health Park to watch the Athletics’ first “home” game against the Chicago Cubs Monday night. The occasion unfortunately ended in a brutal loss for the Athletics in their new temporary home. The Athletics, formerly from Oakland, will play in West Sacramento for the next three seasons until their new stadium is finished in Las Vegas, Nevada.

New season, big changesThis year’s Fan Fest came amid a series of big changes for Sacramento Republic. The team played its first game under new head coach Neill Collins, who joined the “Indomitable Club” late last year after Sacramento parted ways with longtime coach Mark Briggs. In November it was announced that Republic FC has a new majority owner–Wilton Rancheria, the first Tribe to hold majority ownership in a men’s professional sports franchise.

Updated Aug. 8, 10:53 a.m.A wildfire burning in El Dorado County has expanded evacuation orders for several communities northeast of Placerville. Cal Fire says the Crozier Fire, which started Wednesday morning northwest of Slate Mountain, has burned 706 acres and is 5% contained. The cause is under investigation.
